We meet on the second Thursday of each month from 10:30 am until 12 noon in members' homes. We are now actively seeking new members.

This group started in 2003 and since then we have read over 140 books including many novels, essays by Oscar Wilde, selections of poetry by Tennyson, Sylvia Plath, Carol Ann Duffy and poems based on war and nature. Members take it in turn to choose and present a book, which results in books being very different and discussions wide-ranging. Some individual members may not like the choice, but this can provoke more interesting discussion.

Novels range from classics by Jane Austin, Charlotte Bronte and George Elliott to modern writers such as Tracy Chevalier, Rose Tremain, Maggie O’Farrell and William Boyd. Books set in different cultures eg. Japan, India, Iceland, South America and China add an additional dimension as do books set in different time-periods. It is always rewarding to discover an author one has never read before and to realise how literature can broaden and challenge the individual.

Our most recent books have been Dissolution by C.J. Sansom, The Narrow Road to the Deep North by Richard Flanagan, Justine by Lawrence Durrell and H is for Hawk by Helen Macdonald. These four books, all chosen by different group members, reflect the varied subject matter and locations of the books we read.
