Walking

Status:Active, open to new members
Contact:
When: Fortnightly on Wednesday mornings 10:00 am

Convenor: Jane Tel: 07508 363165

We meet fortnightly and the venue varies (please refer to the programme below for information).

All walks start at 10 a.m. unless otherwise stated and are usually around 5 miles and of no more than medium difficulty. We generally finish with a pub lunch or similar, but there is no obligation to stay. Please inform the leader if you intend to walk (not later than 9.00 pm on the evening before). If there is any doubt about the walk going ahead because of the weather, please ring the leader on the morning of the walk.

If you are leading a walk it is sensible to have a mobile phone with you, if you have one, and to make your number available to the other walkers so if anyone is delayed in reaching the meeting point or needs to contact you for any reason once you have left home, they can do so.

Stormy day at Tynemouth

Allenbanks in March

8 July - Around the East Allen
- We've planned a 4-mile circular walk from Allenmill Bridge, taking in paths along the East Allen river, woodland & open fields with 360degree views of the Allen Valley. The first section involves a gentle rise with some gates & stiles. There are nettles bordering some narrow parts of the path so we recommend full leg coverage rather than shorts. The return to Allenmill is mostly downhill with one set of uphill steps to avoid an area where the river bank has collapsed.
- Lunch is booked for 1pm at the King's Head in Allendale, specially for our group. Here is the menu. The special Heritage Pie changes each week, so for our visit the pie choices are Steak & Local Ale or Isaac's Heritage. There is also a vegan option of cauliflower steak, which isn't shown on the menu.
- Be sure to include the portion size with your order. Please send choices to Adele by 4pm on Sunday 5th July.
- Meeting up: Park on the B6295 by Allendale Sports Club, Allen Mill Cottages NE47 9EQ, NY 830 567. (As you leave Catton heading south, take the right fork signposted Carrshields.)

22 July - Alison 07535 839778 - seaside walk from Seaton Sluice, lunch at Waterford Arms

5 August - Tim and Gerry 07875 388135 - circular walk Dalemain, Stainton and Dacre - lunch at The Horse and Farrier, Dacre - option afterwards to visit Dalemain Mansion and Historic Gardens open until 4 pm (admission £17.50 unless you have some concession).

2 September - Stanhope in the Durham Dales
- Approaching either via Blanchland or the A68 and Edmundbyers,  we will meet at the Durham Dales Centre in Stanhope (plenty of free parking, loos etc).
- We walk south-east out of the town then south up towards moorland through the Shittlehope Burn Valley. Returning north-west above the town then down to a lower level, walking along the top of the stone quarries that, along with lead,  made Stanhope wealthy in its day.  Lovely views all the way.   Walking poles are advisable for those who use them.
If the weather forecast nearer the day is terrible we can choose to do the local walk round Hexham we did last year instead.
- Lunch will be at at the Cavaliere, a new cafe/bar/restaurant which has opened in the Durham Dales Centre. There is no need to pre-book but you can find the menu online if you wish.

16 September - Roy and Bridget

30 September - Linda 07946 796199
